Freelancer in NL? Write. It. Off.

Let’s talk deductions.

If you're freelancing in the Netherlands, chances are you're overpaying your taxes without realizing it. The good news? Many everyday expenses are actually deductible. That means less taxable profit — and more money in your pocket. Here's what you should be writing off:

The Basics

Phone & Internet

Got a mobile plan? Paying for Wi-Fi at home? Bought a new tablet or phone this year? If you use any of it for work — from client calls to emailing invoices — it's deductible. The key is that it's used for business, even if just partially.

Pro tip: Keep a percentage breakdown if it’s a mixed personal/business device (e.g., 60% work use).

Travel & Transport

Whether you're hopping on a train to meet a client, taking a tram to a coworking space, or calling an Uber to a gig, your transport counts. Even parking costs can qualify if tied to business use.

Flights to client meetings abroad? Also deductible. Just keep the receipts.

Software & Subscriptions

Using design tools like Adobe, Figma? Storing client files on Dropbox? Hosting your site or running a domain? All fair game. Even ChatGPT — if it helps you deliver work or boost productivity — can be expensed.

Rule of thumb: If it helps you work or land clients, it likely counts.

The Advanced

Client Meetings & Hospitality

That coffee with a prospect? The lunch where you pitched your service? Yes, it’s deductible. Just make sure it’s a genuine business discussion and keep notes or a receipt.

Home Office Costs

Bought a new laptop, monitor, headphones, or even an ergonomic chair? If you're using it to do your job, it's deductible. The same goes for printers, webcams, or anything that makes your home office function like a real workspace.

Admin & Accounting

Hired a bookkeeper? Paid for accounting software? Subscribed to a service like Accomplice? Yes, all tax-deductible. These services directly support your ability to earn and comply.

So what now?

Start tracking, start saving. Every receipt, subscription, and train ride could mean more money back in your bank account. Not sure what counts? I’ll handle the filing. You get the refund.
